What to expect on our Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) Protocol Weight Loss Program

Initial Visit Outline:

Most patients visit our Connecticut weight loss clinic for a one-on-one informational session to learn about our weight loss diet program, protocols, and fees prior to joining. If the patient decides to enroll in the weight loss diet program, they will be given an enrollment package and a lab slip and scheduled for an initial visit. The initial visit lasts about 1 ½ hours and includes a comprehensive history and physical examination, lab review, EKG, and personalized dietary prescription.

Signature Protocol

Our signature protocol is the Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD), or Protein Sparing Modified Fast (PSMF). VLCDs and Protein Sparing Modified Fasts have been used interchangeably, but the two weight loss diet programs have also been used to differentiate using meal replacements (VLCD) or regular food (PSMF) as the nutrient source. At Medical Weight Loss Centers of Connecticut we use a “hybrid” of the two protocols.

How The Weight Loss Program Works:

During the first week, the patient is placed on the strict VLCD protocol consisting of meal replacements, 150 calories of carbohydrate vegetables, and two servings of fat. Additionally, the patient is placed on vitamin and mineral supplements, electrolyte replacement, and plenty of water.

After the first week, the patient has the option of switching to the “hybrid” protocol, where two of the meal replacements are substituted for sold protein (chicken, fish, steak, etc.) The protocol will not change after this point for the next twelve weeks. Patients who have 50 or more pounds to lose may enroll in a second or third twelve-week program.

Women generally lose 3 to 3 ½ pounds per week and men lose 4 to 5 pounds per week on a VLCD. The average losses are 2-3 times greater than those resulting from conventional calorie-reducing diets used for the same time period. These results may be partially attributable to the portion-and calorie-controlled servings that meal replacements include and likely facilitate excellent adherence and, thus, large weight losses. Often when obese patients are asked to consume a conventional diet, they underestimate their caloric intake by as much as 40%.

Experience with VLCDs is unusual among even the best trained of physicians. It takes a special effort to become trained and experienced in the unique characteristics of this type of diet. At Medical Weight Loss Centers, we are medical weight loss specialists. Our staff has advanced training in bariatric medicine and Certificates of Advanced Training in Bariatric Medicine from the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM.)
